Matt
Goodaye matt, from a current serving Army Engineer over in the Middle East. I have just clocked up 19 years and looking forward to my DFRDB pension and semi-retiring with my family in Townsville. I believe I might of served with you in the early 1990's at Ennogerra in Brisbane, I was then posted at 2 CER and subsequently 20 Div ESS. Anyway, back to the fishing, I have always had a passion for barramundi and this has led me to all places throughout north QLD and the NT. I take great pride in using quality gear and this has also led me to a little "side" business that has flourished over the last couple of years. I make up "Wind-On" leaders systems for tropical sportsfishing applications ranging from 40lb to 100lb.
On another note, there is nothing better than going out and specifically targeting saratoga in the billabongs to the east of Darwin. I predominately use the small type "bass" size spinnerbaits in natural colours. I find that these smaller spinnerbaits are the ideal size but lack the strength especially in relation to the hooks and the fine guage wire. I am going up to Darwin for a week in August and 5 of my mates are heading out to the billabongs for 4 days. We are planning to fish Yellow Waters, Mary River Bridge Lagoon, Hardies Lagoon and Corroborre Billabong. Most of my tackle bag will contain soft plastics and spinnerbaits with a few hard bodies thrown in. One thing I will be doing is giving your "nitro" spinnerbaits a good workout. My question is where can I purchase them in Townsville?? or where can I order some via the mail system. The favourite colour I find best for saratoga is chartuese but I would be interested in other anglers feedback, opinion and recommendations on this subject.
Cheers for now

I use the albright for all my leader to braid connections and so far have not had a failure at the knot. I only mention this because everybody says it suits heavy material only. I use it in my ultra light whiteing gear and my heavy jigging gear. To me it's the quickest, easiest and very reliable.

Great article Adam. I have only just started fishing for trout with soft plastics and it really can take some time to master. I have found that the smaller soft plastics can be quite hard to get a good action out of. i spent many frustrating days watching trout follow my rainbow trout softs only to loose interest i think because of the unrealisic action. Then when i went to big i had problems with hook ups, plenty of hits with little success. I think they key is persistance dont loose interest as soft plastics are great fun and very successful
