Matt Fraser’s Nitro blog is live!
Matt Fraser, the designer of the fantastic Nitro jig head series has gone live with his blog. Upcoming features will include all sorts of Nitro info from design priciples to optimal usage and conditions for the whole range.
A small excerpt from his blog bio:
I’ve been a mad keen fisherman for as long as I can remember. I started fishing in the creeks around Dalby and Murgon, and on school holidays fished the beaches and estuaries of the Gold and Sunshine Coast. All my fishing was land based apart from the fishing I did in my kayak I bought when I was thirteen.
When I was 20, I bought a 12 foot Stessl with a 15 hp Evinrude, and that’s when I started to seriously get into sport fishing. Initially I spent a lot of time on the Dams of Bjelke Petersen, Boondooma and Somerset as they were really booming at this time. I then graduated to the estuaries where I became obsessed with jewies and mangrove jack and flathead. I started getting into competitions like the Flathead Classic and North Brisbane Sportfishing Club’s catch and release comp on Somerset Dam. As well and ANSA line class comps.
In partnership with my brother, we made the Dam Hot series of DVD’s in ’98, ’99 and 2000.
My background trade is diesel fitting, I did my apprenticeship in the Army and stayed on for 14 years. I served most of my time in South East Queensland, with a two year stint in Darwin. I had a ball there, mainly chasing barra in the rivers and billabongs.
I returned to Brisbane from Darwin in 2001, and the ABT scene had really taken off in Queensland. I started fishing Bass Pro events and have since managed a few top ten finishes. I first started making jigheads in 2001, then left the Army to go into business with Nitro Fishing Technologies in 2002. I also tried bream events that year only to qualify for the Grand Final in my first year and then go on to win it.
It was a very busy time as Nitro Jigheads quickly boomed. After three years in business on my own, I joined the Pure Fishing team in 2006 to allow me more time to focus on the development of jigheads and fishing tackle while Pure Fishing takes care of the other aspects of business.
It’s been a good partnership as the Nitro brand of products has really boomed in the Pure fishing stable. I am continually striving to improve and expand the current range of Nitro jigheads to suit angler’s needs. Lead free products such as the Nitro spinnerbaits and Bream Finesse jigheads are other products I have developed. Currently I am working with soft plastics and alloys to develop specific lures and jigs for specific soft plastic applications. Some of the products I am working on will take soft plastic lure presentation methods to another level – did I tell you how much I love my job!

Goodaye matt, from a current serving Army Engineer over in the Middle East. I have just clocked up 19 years and looking forward to my DFRDB pension and semi-retiring with my family in Townsville. I believe I might of served with you in the early 1990′s at Ennogerra in Brisbane, I was then posted at 2 CER and subsequently 20 Div ESS. Anyway, back to the fishing, I have always had a passion for barramundi and this has led me to all places throughout north QLD and the NT. I take great pride in using quality gear and this has also led me to a little “side” business that has flourished over the last couple of years. I make up “Wind-On” leaders systems for tropical sportsfishing applications ranging from 40lb to 100lb.
On another note, there is nothing better than going out and specifically targeting saratoga in the billabongs to the east of Darwin. I predominately use the small type “bass” size spinnerbaits in natural colours. I find that these smaller spinnerbaits are the ideal size but lack the strength especially in relation to the hooks and the fine guage wire. I am going up to Darwin for a week in August and 5 of my mates are heading out to the billabongs for 4 days. We are planning to fish Yellow Waters, Mary River Bridge Lagoon, Hardies Lagoon and Corroborre Billabong. Most of my tackle bag will contain soft plastics and spinnerbaits with a few hard bodies thrown in. One thing I will be doing is giving your “nitro” spinnerbaits a good workout. My question is where can I purchase them in Townsville?? or where can I order some via the mail system. The favourite colour I find best for saratoga is chartuese but I would be interested in other anglers feedback, opinion and recommendations on this subject.
Cheers for now

Hey Matt, This is Jack, Ashley’s friend.
I hope all is well with you and that you family is well too.
I recently went fishing with Ash and we had a good time…caught a bream, it was fun.
I don’t know if you have spoken to Ash but during our fishing trip we met a guy that we helped out and turns out that this dude is a mad fisherman! I am talking about expensive equipment.
We mentioned your name to him and he is very interested in meeting you. So call me or talk to Ashley about this guy.
I look forward to your reply.
take care buddy
Kind Regards
Jack Bravo
