North Haven North Haven is a Fishermans paradise, situated 30km south of Port Macquarie. It is a small yet unique town offering everything you need to enjoy a nice fishing weekender away and or a week holiday with the family. We recently decided that we wanted to explore some new areas closer to Sydney and with only a 4 hour drive it made a big difference.
We arrived early Saturday morning and drove straight to the ramp. We launched at the North Haven boat ramp and headed out to find some close snapper grounds. The sun was up and it was a late start. However, we still managed to pull a few small snapper.
Mid Morning we were keen to go try some of the jigging grounds we have heard so much about. It didn’t take long until we sounded up a patch of good size kingies, every drop for a good couple hours we were enjoying jigging 5-8kgs kings. There is some unreal terrain off the coast of North Haven, I definitely recommended it if you have the time to get out there and explore this part of the east coast.
Whilst we were there the current was racing at 4knots which made fishing and jigging the deep water grounds incredibly hard. We were determined to explore these grounds as much as we could targeting bar cod and deep water fish. We continually persisted though the strong current and by the late afternoon I scored myself my first bar cod. The sun was setting and the crew were feeling tired, but we managed to flick a few plastics in close, where a couple of nice reds came aboard.
New day, sun rising and light winds, we were again ready for some deep water fishing. Focusing on the Jigging and live baiting we were keen to keep exploring. The live bait were hard to find and with time being wasted we only managed to get a few. The day resulted in kingies, nannygais and the odd leather jacket stealing the jig, we headed home a happy crew. I am looking forward to getting back up there to discover more grounds, with the next weekender already on the cards, I propose that if you can, go to North Haven and discover what we have, A Fishermans paradise.
Cheers Hayley
