
Winter Snapper On Plastics – Mark ‘The Captain’ Phillips
Catching snapper on soft plastics is not as hard as you may imagine, in fact I’d go as far to say that it’s much harder to catch species such as bream on plastics due to the finesse factor involved. Deadly accurate casting and slow articulate retrieves are things that you really don’t need to master to catch snapper on plastics. As long as you can hurl a lure in the general direction you intended it to travel you’re in with a chance of catching a knobby headed winter snapper. My favourite way to catch big snapper at this time of the year is to fish small flat top pieces of reef that rise steeply out of deep water to within metres of the surface. It helps to have a bit of movement in the water and even better if there is the occasional wave breaking on top of the shallowest section of reef.
