Recently, both I and good mate Craig have been spending far more time fishing the flats and enjoying good success around our hometown of Noosa. We gave Berkley’s new 3B Crank (scum dogs) their first walk across them last Saturday.

Although we really lack the size (compared to the lucky southerners) when it comes to Bream we certainly have a healthy population of them in South East Queensland. Our afternoon plan was relatively simple and first up we targeted Bream and had a fantastic session on them, with the fish responding really well to the scum dogs. An effective technique for us was to simply walk the lure across the surface slowly with a slight ‘shaking‘ of the rod tip (pointed down) and allow the lure to do its thing and walk/dart from side to side. Following this we would simply let the lure sit still and many hits would come while the lure was stationary. It provided some very entertaining fishing.
With plenty of Bream coming to the party (many little fellas amongst them) I was pretty keen to give the 3B’s a walk for a whiting also as in the weeks prior we had landed some very nice Whiting fishing the surface. Craig was first to score and as a nice fish created a big bow behind his scum dog, it was hit and he landed a respectable 32cm Whiting. As with surface poppers the key for the whiting was to keep the lure moving at a consistent pace. The species list was growing for the day.
Next up was possibly the world’s smallest GT but the aggression shown towards the lure was great and I started to see how effective these little lures are (and will be) on a wide range of species. One particularly effective colour for us in the range was the ‘Hooch’ colour (pictured below).Very Prawn like when walking across the surface and an excellent finish.
The next plan for the 3B Crank scum dogs will be a Trip to the Noosa Everglades where the resident Tarpon will be the target. I have a strong feeling the Tarpon will be climbing all over these little lures.
