I've been a mad keen fisherman for as long as I can remember. I started
fishing in the creeks around Dalby and Murgon, and on school holidays
fished the beaches and estuaries of the Gold and Sunshine Coast. All my
fishing was land based apart from the fishing I did in my kayak I bought
when I was thirteen.
When I was 20, I bought a 12 foot Stessl with a 15 hp Evinrude, and
that's when I started to seriously get into sport fishing. Initially I
spent a lot of time on the Dams of Bjelke Petersen, Boondooma and
Somerset as they were really booming at this time. I then graduated to
the estuaries where I became obsessed with jewies and mangrove jack and
flathead. I started getting into competitions like the Flathead Classic
and North Brisbane Sportfishing Club's catch and release comp on
Somerset Dam. As well and ANSA line class comps.
In partnership with my brother, we made the Dam Hot series of DVD's in
'98, '99 and 2000.
My background trade is diesel fitting, I did my apprenticeship in the
Army and stayed on for 14 years. I served most of my time in South East
Queensland, with a two year stint in Darwin. I had a ball there, mainly
chasing barra in the rivers and billabongs.
I returned to Brisbane from Darwin in 2001, and the ABT scene had really
taken off in Queensland. I started fishing Bass Pro events and have
since managed a few top ten finishes. I first started making jigheads in
2001, then left the Army to go into business with Nitro Fishing
Technologies in 2002. I also tried bream events that year only to
qualify for the Grand Final in my first year and then go on to win it.
It was a very busy time as Nitro Jigheads quickly boomed. After three
years in business on my own, I joined the Pure Fishing team in 2006 to
allow me more time to focus on the development of jigheads and fishing
tackle while Pure Fishing takes care of the other aspects of business.
It's been a good partnership as the Nitro brand of products has really
boomed in the Pure fishing stable. I am continually striving to improve
and expand the current range of Nitro jigheads to suit angler's needs.
Lead free products such as the Nitro spinnerbaits and Bream Finesse
jigheads are other products I have developed. Currently I am working
with soft plastics and alloys to develop specific lures and jigs for
specific soft plastic applications. Some of the products I am working on
will take soft plastic lure presentation methods to another level - did
I tell you how much I love my job!
